High flying Black-tailed Godwits –

One of the most common questions I am asked during any talk I give is ‘how high do shorebirds fly?’ Well, I would hedge my bets and say ‘anywhere from 100 to 5,000ms depending on conditions’. Well now I can answer in a similar vein but with more authority, due to this excellent paper led by Nathan Senner. The study was funded by the Dutch scientific agency, NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek/Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) in a grant to Theunis Piersma called “shorebirds in space.”

And it’s up to 6,000m!
